Not that audiophile acceptance would ever stop me using a product, but the abysmal measurements demonstrated by many first-generation class D products certainly did. Perhaps the most notable of these designers in recent times is Bruno Putzeys of Hypex Electronics. Founded inHypex supplied plate amplifiers to the pro audio market and later to hi-fi manufacturers, first with a line of plate amps developed for subwoofers and later multi-channel units and active crossovers for studio use.

Unlike the implementations of class D switching typology that came before, UCD modules have a flat frequency response irrespective of load impedance, nearly frequency-independent distortion behaviour and very low radiated and conducted EMI.

Putzeys invented the technology working in the Philips lab in Leuven Belgium producing an initial 25W module intended for use in a television, and later developing modules with more power and a refined design. Further to his joining Hypex, Putzeys also founded Mola-Mola — a high-end brand for which he designed a complete range of five-figure amplification and source electronics.

Today, Hypex is primarily split into two divisions. Via diyclassd. Many highly respected brands — Marantz and NAD to name just two — are now using Hypex technology in their flagship products, with many more following suit. The current crop of UCD amplifiers bare little resemblance to the original circuit. A mathematically exact understanding of self-oscillation allows optimisation of large-signal performance. Improved comparator circuitry, where the PWM signal is created by comparing the input signal to the signal of a high-frequency triangular wave generator, insures that actual behaviour matches the theoretical model as closely as possible.

And new gate drive circuitry improves open-loop distortion at moderate signal levels while significantly reducing idle losses. In short, Hypex Class D amplifiers are is ultra-linear, with noise and distortion levels that are next to non-existent and should certainly be inaudible to the human ear.

NCore amps are largely based on the same principles but also implement a control loop adding 20dB of gain across the full audio range without sacrificing stability.

The primary, and really the only advantage of a class D amplifier over and above a good linear design is efficiency and compactness. Class D is an analogue switching typology, and class D amplifiers are often paired with a switching power supply.

After all, pairing a class D amplifier with a linear power supply as in a traditional amplifier outweighs much of the class D advantage. Though it has to be said that neither a switching amplifier nor a switching power supply are especially suited to amplifying audio. A switching amplifier is, as its name implies, one in which the transistors are operated either full on or full off, the pulses modulated by the audio signal. Switching transistors use no power when fully off and when fully on present the least resistance and thus the lowest possible power consumption.A while back I decided to build a proper power amplifier for my setup.

I wanted it to be very good sound-wise, but also quite powerful since my speakers like a lot of power. Hypex recommends that the LMs used as buffers be powered by off-board high quality power supplies, so I decided to go that way. With all that in mind, I purchased a 2U aluminum chassis from modushop.

Yeah, I know. I designed the circuit and the PCB in Diptrace. Next up was the rear of the chassis. I think it turned out OK. Next up, I had to modify the modules since I wanted to use an outboard aux power supply.

That meant desoldering the power transistors that do most of the work:. Everything went according to plan, no magic smoke was released, so I proceeded to the final assembly. This was the end result:.

Meanwhile, I had built a little power control board, seen above on the bottom left. Nothing fancy, just a stand-by power supply, the necessary fuses and a couple of high current relays. That led me to think up of a new power control board:.

The timing of the relays was controlled by three timer ICs, set to monostable mode and each adjusted to a different time period. Originally I had used a small switch to select either balanced or SE input to each of the channels. That worked OK, but eventually I wanted to have remote control of the input selection, as well as a better overall solution.

That led me to design a small PCB that would house a small signal relay and some control elements. A logic low at the control pin selects the balanced input, a logic high the single ended. Pin 1 of the XLR socket should be connected to the chassis.

They should be electrically isolated from the chassis. There are three pins. This exact method of grounding virtually guarantees no problems due to ground loops no humming etc.

My amps are dead quiet. I am looking into Hypex now and think a 3 channel system would be a good deal.

How do yours sound? The Hypex amps are pretty great if you need a lot of power without sacrificing SQ. My center channel is also DIY, using Seas units. They produce a whole range of products, but are most famous for their class D amplifier modules.

Hypex have a great reputation in the business and could be considered a sort of "manufacturer's manufacturer". When I visited Max Townshend last year and he demonstrated his fantastic reference system to me, I was very surprised to find Hypex UcD amplifier modules in there. Max did tell me that he was using them with his own linear power supply, but still there's no doubt that Hypex is being used in some of the best systems in the world, and several rather expensive high-end amplifiers are in fact simply based on Hypex modules.

Even some of the latest NAD digital amplification was developed in collaboration with Hypex. These guys really know what they are doing, that much is clear. So, when a manufacturer like this announces that they are introducing a new range of improved amplifier modules, it should get our attention.

The NCore modules are said to have extremely low distortion and noise into loads as low as 2 ohms. The NC modules in my review sample can produce watt, but that's in 4 ohm. It is probably more realistic to call these watt amplifiers, but then again: they can actually produce almost watt into 2 ohm! And on top of that they even have a damping factor of almost into that 2 ohm load, at 20 kHz!

You won't find many amps with the specs of these modules, believe me. The promise, therefore, is technically perfect sound. Not all audiophiles are after that, but I personally cannot think of one single reason why. This comes complete with all cables needed to connect it to the NC As the NC actually has on-board overload and error protection you can build your own power amp using just one power supply board and one NC per channel.

This combination is explicitly aimed at DIY amp builders, and not at commercial users. Lucky us. I have actually reviewed another Hypex product before: the rather nice AS2. I liked these very much, even though they weren't perfect. They claim it is much better and more flexible than the AS2. It really is difficult to imagine something you cannot do with the DLCP, but the main purpose of the unit is obviously to create a digital active 3-way stereo loudspeaker system, with the additional option of doing some basic room correction as well.

You just need a digital or analogue source and 6 channels of amplification. What would happen, I couldn't help asking myself, if these two components came together?

Use the DLCP module to digitally split the signal for a 3-way stereo system and use 6 NCore amplifier modules to actively drive the speakers. That would make an interesting system!

Control is based on a phase-shift controlled self-oscillating loop taking feedback only at the speaker output. For this, a licence deal was closed with Philips for the "Universal Class D" circuit. Realising the market potential of the circuit, Hypex decided not only to use the technology in completed subassemblies, but also to sell bare amplifier modules to the open market. The UcD and UcD modules have quickly established themselves as the new standard, both in terms of measured and subjective performance.

Tags: hypex monoblock. The build itself is rather simple and very straightforward. So much so that I have to wonder if this really belongs in the DIY section. The biggest hurdle was mounting the UCD modules to the Ghent-Audio case as the case is to low to mount the modules directly to the chassis.

I decide upon a L-bracket and seem to work fine, while also giving plenty of clearance around the module. I have now tested them a while and have been very pleased with them.

I had a good time building these amps. It was a fun and educational project. I will expand here on the process, for those considering building something similar, but do not know how to start. Warning: Electricity can kill. Some ears I trust have said they feel that while the Ncore are better sounding, the current UCD's are better value That saidif I was building this for stereo usage only I would probably have bought at the Ncores instead of the UCD Since my future plans include replacing my receiver with an AV-preamp and run all UCD power amps, which can be build as needed and expanded to include Dolby Atmos, etc, I started with the power-amps for the fronts.

I can neither confirm nor deny this as I have not hear the various versions side by side. Those lights sure are pretty though when they startup. I wanted monoblocks - mainly because of ease of building and cooling. This pushes up the price, but it is also easier to find pre-made cases. My research led me to GhentAudio and their cases. I might be incorrect, but these seem to be the case that Hypex uses in their own kits.

Ghent himself responds quickly to questions and seems very flexible in how these case can be modded. Pricing works out to about euros per mono-block. The Ghent case is not directly compatible with the UCD, meaning the module it cannot be attached directly to the case via its heat sink. Ghent do provide did pre-drilled holes for the UCD, however then a separate cooling heat sink would be needed.

I felt this gets needlessly complicated. In my case I decided to use a 4 mm aluminium L-Bracket. I drilled the holes to attach the UCD module and then holes in the case to mount the bracket too.June 30, Leave a comment. What is it? Since the OEM-version of the UcD modules includes the option of bypassing the input buffer there are two versions, one for buffered input and one for unbuffered input.
